RALEIGH, N.C. (March 28, 2024) — The Council on Black Health proudly announces the launch of the Black Male Health Initiative (BMHI), a new endeavor aimed at revolutionizing the well-being of Black males across communities. With a mission to foster holistic health and vitality, BMHI will spearhead initiatives addressing the mental, physical, social, economic, and spiritual dimensions of wellness.
“I couldn’t be more elated to announce the launch of this new, groundbreaking initiative,” said Dr. Melicia Whitt-Glover, Executive Director of the Council on Black Health. “BMHI shows our dedication to helping Black people’s well-being. It’s a crucial step to support and strengthen our community’s subgroups. In this instance, Black males of all ages.
“Black people are diverse, and we need solutions for health that reflect that diversity,” said Dr. Whitt-Glover. “This is our first subgroup with an ‘official’ initiative, but it won’t be the last.”
Selected to lead the group prioritizing Black male health is Marcus Murray, MPH, a Chicago-based community advocate for Black men’s health for over 25 years and a longtime Council member. “The time for action is now. Engaging Black men will be our primary focus as we work toward health equity for all. Let us come together as public health professionals and develop and implement interventions that effectively engage Black men in health promotion and disease prevention efforts.”
Murray was a co-founder of Project Brotherhood: A Black Men’s Clinic, a nonprofit community health organization focused on using outreach and preventive education to meet the needs and improve the health of Black men nationwide.
Murray has presented over 100 national public health presentations on the health of Black men before state and national government departments, local community audiences, and public health conferences. He was invited to the White House as a guest expert speaker on Black men’s health. Also, Murray and Project Brotherhood were featured on CNN’s Black in America 2: Today’s Pioneers, highlighting the organization as a solution to many of the problems Black men face in healthcare.
